The Enemy Within: Dealing With Fraud in Your Pool
No one wants to hear that even though you believe you are doing everything “right”– rigorous annual clean audits, regular external reviews by reinsurance partners, an active internal audit function, and rigorous policies regularly reviewed through the AGRiP Recognition Standards – things can still go wrong. In this case, we will hear about one pool’s very personal experience – recently concluded with the criminal sentencing of a long-time employee – and the lessons learned. From discovering the fraud – which involved embezzlement of over $1 million over a 10 year period – to working with the authorities, managing the public relations, and dealing with employee morale, we are grateful to Dubravka for sharing this experience, and perhaps preventing it from happening in other pools.

Risk Asset Positioning for Pools
Pools may have different goals and constraints when it comes to investment policies, but many have considered options for increasing portfolio allocations to equities or other risk assets. This presentation will explore the considerations, pros and cons of a pool investment portfolio inclusive of greater risk asset allocation – including how those considerations might change based on the overall size of such allocation. This issue will be examined from a financial perspective as well as a governance perspective, including stories from pools who have gone through a portfolio transition process and lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Untapped Synergy: A Conversation About the Future of Reinsurance
The research for the basis of this discussion can be found at http://papers.ssrn.com/abstract=2573253.

While pools and reinsurers appear to have differing goals, recent research has shown what many in both industries have suspected—a symbiotic relationship can benefit both far more greatly than individual efforts. Reinsurers often learn lessons about underwriting and claims the hard way, and are able to share their nation wide experience with pools. On the other side, pools are more attuned to their local political and legal environment, as well as the unique exposures faced by their members. By building an open and mutually informative relationship, both pool and reinsurer can reach new heights. This session will address the interaction and governance issues that can arise, possible solutions, and what the coming decade will bring to the poolreinsurer relationship.
